Saying goodbye to established stereotypes happened very quickly. I now have unlimited personal growth and so do my colleagues, We are lucky to meet many interesting people through our work, and have created our own vision of what it means to achieve success together.

After a few years, the work became repetitive, and I began to feel bored. At the same time, I got married, and we had our first child. With sufficient time at work to contemplate my future, despite progressing in my career within the company, I still felt unsatisfied. I’ve always been drawn to finance, so I started studying real estate and stock investing, considering the possibility of a job change. One day, I informed my boss, “I’ll be leaving after the next season,” which was less than a year away.

I’m looking for a new direction

Back then, I didn’t have a clear plan for my next move. I explored various job opportunities on professional platforms, but I knew that merely switching to a similar role in a different company wouldn’t address my dissatisfaction. I considered the prospect of working in investment firms like Penta, PPF, J&T, etc., and attempted to secure interviews for different positions. However, I faced challenges—most invitations eluded me due to a lack of required qualifications. When I did get an interview, it was evident to both parties that I wasn’t the right fit.

Simultaneously, I recognized that working in these companies would demand much more time than my current job. Around this time, my wife and I were anticipating the arrival of our second child. From a family perspective, my career ambitions needed to take a backseat. I also acknowledged that even in these investment firms, over time, the job might lose its fulfillment for me.

In the final months before the season ended, I came across an ad in the town hall magazine from the local real estate agency RE/MAX, announcing they were hiring new agents for their branch. The office was conveniently just five minutes from my home, a refreshing change from the hour-long commute I was accustomed to. Intrigued, I decided to inquire about the role of a real estate agent.

I met with the owner, and after a two-hour conversation, I was convinced that becoming a real estate agent aligned perfectly with my professional aspirations. The job offered the autonomy and creativity I craved, a stark contrast to the corporate environment where adhering to rigid work instructions and implementing any improvement suggestions was a challenging process. As a real estate agent, I am in control of my time, and personal growth knows no bounds. Engaging with a diverse range of interesting people has become a regular part of my routine.

The owner was surprised when I announced my departure after the season to pursue a career in real estate. He expected me to continue, but my mind was already set on a different path. Bid farewell to my colleagues wasn’t easy. Even now, looking back, I recognize the friendships I formed over the past five years, making the decision to embark on a new chapter in real life not entirely comprehensible to everyone.

Tough times hit me. Being a real estate agent has its perks, as I mentioned earlier, but one significant drawback compared to traditional employment is the absence of a regular salary. For a novice like me, it took several months to grasp the ins and outs of the profession, secure my first orders, and successfully execute them. I earned my initial income in real estate after six months, and it roughly equated to a month’s pay from my previous job. With limited savings and the responsibility of providing for a family of four, I juggled mandatory social and health insurance contributions, phone bills, marketing expenses, and more. Some people around me couldn’t fathom the uncertain path I had chosen.

During those challenging times, my daily lunch consisted of a banana and kefir, totaling just 18 Czech crowns, but enough to fill me up. By the end of the first six months, I found myself with a maxed-out overdraft, a credit card balance, and a handful of smaller debts. The latter half of the year brought slight improvement; I earned less than in my previous job, but at least it was consistent. The second year marked progress, allowing me to start paying off my debts, and I could finally say that I survived the transition from a stable job to the real estate business. By the third year, my income was becoming decent. However, a setback occurred when the owner of the RE/MAX branch decided to close the office due to falling short of revenue expectations.

In response, several colleagues and I reached an agreement. We pooled our resources, bought a RE/MAX franchise, and established our own real estate agency. This move was a game-changer. As a co-owner, I felt significantly more liberated, and I seized the opportunity to build a team of professionals.
